Round Lake collegian killed in snowmobile crash

A popular lifeguard and manager at the Round Lake Area Park District Aquatic Center died Saturday in a snowmobile accident near Eagle River, Wis.

Officials with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that Christine Bronken, 20, of Round Lake, was killed Saturday in Three Lakes Township, south of Eagle River.

Bronken was a graduate of Grant Community High School where she had been a varsity cheerleader, and was a student at St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis.

Her mother, Susan Bronken, said Monday that Christine was deeply involved with the community and her parish, was an outdoor enthusiast and participated in a multitude of activities in both high school and college.

“Her friends and family will never forget her,” Susan Bronken said.

Bronken had been a manager at the Round Lake Area Park District Aquatic Center for the past two years and a lifeguard with the district for three years, according to Park District Assistant Director Bob Newport.

“She was a nice young girl and a great staff member,” Newport said Monday, adding that she will be missed by district management and her fellow lifeguards,

Bronken was currently a member of the St. Norbert College Wake Board Team, and she had been a Student Council officer and National Honor Society member while at Grant High School.

According to Gary Eddy, ATV/snowmobile administrator for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Bronken was one of three snowmobile fatalities over the weekend.

Eddy said Bronken was riding a snowmobile early Saturday on a road open to snowmobiling when she missed a turn, left the road and collided with a house.
