Despite the nearly foot of snow that fell on Wausau and elsewhere throughout central Wisconsin between Tuesday and Wednesday, the snowmobile trails in Marathon and Lincoln counties won’t open anytime soon.
Snowmobile trails generally need about 6 inches of compacted snow to serve as a base. While more than 6 inches fell in Marathon and Lincoln counties, it won’t be enough for groomers to prepare the trails, especially when other factors, such as unfrozen lakes and streams, hunters and farmers’ crops, will keep the trails closed.
