EDMONTON – A 30-year-old Strathcona County man is dead after his snowmobile crashed into an SUV Sunday afternoon, police say.
RCMP and paramedics were called to the scene near Range Road 213 and Township Road 540 in northeast Strathcona County at about 1:15 p.m., said Const. Wally Henry. The snowmobiler was under a 1997 GMC Suburban and pronounced dead at the scene.
“The preliminary investigation is showing us the snowmobile entered the roadway.
“At this point, we don’t know why that happened,” Henry said. “The SUV was driving along on the road as per normal.”
The driver and a passenger in the SUV were shaken, he said. Charges are not likely to be laid.
Visibility was good and conditions were clear at the time of the crash, Henry said.
“There was some snow on the road and some slippery sections just as a result of the snow we had yesterday, but it isn’t believed that that was a contributing factor to the collision.”
The name of the snowmobiler has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
