ROCKFORD, IA- A North Iowa women dies at the scene, after being run over by a snowmobile.

Saturday afternoon, just south of Rockford and a little more than a mile up this tree line marks the spot of this accident.

Jamie Fox of Greene was driving a snowmobile when she lost control and fell off. She was then hit by another snowmobile who was close behind.

DNR officials say the accident scene was not easy to get to and is still under investigation.

They say Fox was wearing a helmet and they don’t think the snowmobiles were going that fast.

Either way, an area snowmobile club is trying to make this trail a little safer after Saturday’s accident.

Joe Paulus is one of the officers of the Floyd County Snowmobile Club.

After Saturday’s Accident he’s out doing what he can to keep this popular trail safer.

Joe Paulus, VP of Floyd County Groomers Club said, ”we’re remarking some of the trails and we noticed some signage was gone and after the accident we wanted to put up more signs.”

Paulus wants to encourage riders to slow down along this stretch of the trail near Rockford.

Most snowmobiles weigh more than 600 pounds and some can reach speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

It’s not a good combination if riders are trying to avoid hitting something.

Joe Paulus said, “it’s harder to steer than a car and the breaking depends on the snow conditions; if it’s ice or snow.”

DNR Conservation Officer Eric Johnston said Saturday’s wreck was probably a matter of steering.

Johnston said, “I don’t think these people were going that fast, it was more a timing issue and not enough time to get out of the way.”

He says snowmobiles are not toys.

Johnston said, “they’re pretty heavy machines, use caution and good common sense when using them.”

Paulus recommends that riders always carry a few items with them in case of an emergency.

Paulus said, ”we have a spare belt, toe rope, cell phone and you should always have someone ride with you, case something happens.”

Both agree that accidents are bound to happen, but they say taking hills and turns extra slow can help keep riders safer.

Iowa’s DNR says they haven’t seen an unusual amount of snowmobile accidents this winter.

They say compared to other nearby states, Iowa’s number is pretty low.

The missing man’s brother said Friday that the 52-year-old Davis disappeared Sunday, and the family didn’t want anyone to take risks by searching for him.

Davis, who lived about three miles north of Shueyville, left home Sunday and told family he’d be back by late afternoon. Police and family say they suspect his snowmobile fell through the ice on Coralville Lake.

Volunteers, sheriff’s deputies, a State Patrol aircraft and a helicopter combed woods and hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails along the Linn and Johnson County borders early in the week, but found nothing. The search was suspended before the snow hit Wednesday.

Question: Is it legal to drive snowmobiles within the city limits? We live close to the Northwest Arterial and once the snow falls we hear snowmobiles traveling along the road every night.

Answer: The current Dubuque City Code does not specifically address snowmobile use in the city.

It does, however, ban the operation of snowmobiles on frozen waterways, such as the Mississippi River.

Dubuque Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Scott Baxter said officers would utilize the Iowa State Code instead of the Dubuque City Code to determine any enforcement action necessary when it comes to snowmobiles.

The Iowa State Code states a snowmobile shall not be operated on public highways under any of the following conditions:

* On the roadway portion of a highway and adjacent shoulder, or at least five feet on either side of the road.

* On limited access highways and approaches.

* For racing.

* Abreast with one or more other snowmobiles on a city highway.

People are also not allowed to operate a snowmobile in any park, wildlife area or preserve, except on designated snowmobile trails.

The Iowa State Code states a registered snowmobile may be operated under the following conditions:

* Upon city highways that have not been plowed during the snow season.

* On a portion of county roadways that have not been plowed during the snow season or are not maintained or utilized for the operation of conventional two-wheel drive motor vehicles.

* On highways in an emergency during the period of time when snow upon the roadway renders travel by conventional motor vehicles impractical.

* On the roadway or shoulder when necessary to cross a bridge or culvert, or to avoid an obstruction, if the snowmobile is brought to a complete stop before entering the roadway or shoulder and the driver yields the right-of-way.

In addition to the laws listed in the Iowa State Code, trespass and other laws could be applied in certain snowmobile situations.

The search for a Cedar Rapids man, missing since going for a snowmobile ride on Sunday, entered a second full day this morning. Martin Davis, 52, had told his girlfriend he would ride towards North Liberty from his home on Club Road. That rural residence is located about halfway between The Eastern Iowa Airport and the Airport National Golf Course. At least 150 searchers helped comb the area on Monday. Organizers did not have an exact count this morning.

However, they expected at least as many to show up again today. The search parties today included at least 30 employees from Clipper Windpower in Cedar Rapids. Marty Davis was a maintenance man at that company, which manufactures windpower components. The company allowed employees to join the search on company time. The Linn and Johnson County sheriff’s departments, as well as the Iowa State Patrol, are helping coordinate search efforts. But one deputy told TV9 they are assisting, but not leading, the search at this point. Searchers this morning were told to start in an area much closer to the Davis residence. Searchers swept through a number of snowmobile trails nearby, so the idea is the missing man may have been on a short trip closer to home, rather than on an extended trip.

Davis’ girlfriend, Tiffany Koss, told TV9 that Davis left the lights on, the television on and the house unlocked, so that’s why she assumed it would just be a short trip. Davis was wearing appropriate winter clothing, but had not taken the heavy clothing necessary for an extended snowmobile trip, Koss said. Marty Davis was riding a yellow snowmobile and wearing dark clothing and a dark helmet. He is the brother of well-known Hawkeye wrestler Barry Davis, who is now the University of Wisconsin wrestling coach. Davis arrived yesterday to help in the search for the missing man.
