ISHPEMING — Snowmobile sales have reportedly gone up in Minnesota this season, but how about the U.P.?

At Meyer Enterprises in Ishpeming Township, snowmobile sales have been stagnant since people are spending more money repairing their old sleds.

“Generally speaking, Presidents Day weekend and Valentines Day weekend when they fall together like this, we have some people that have an extended weekend, a three-day, four-day weekend so we hope that it’s a busy weekend here in central Upper Michigan and throughout the U.P.,” said Greg Meyer, Co-Owner, Meyer Enterprises.

Meyer says that the lack of snow in lower Michigan and other parts of the country have brought snowmobile enthusiasts to the U.P., also helping his sales.

CHEBOYGAN COUNTY — A Cheboygan County woman is dead from injuries she suffered when a snowmobile ran over her.

It happened Friday at the home on Heilman Road in Munroe Township. Officials say the snowmobile was running but the cover had not been completely removed from the machine. When 66-year-old Nora Killpatrick tried removing the cover it caught the throttle and caused the snowmobile to lurch forward.

Killpatrick was hit by the snowmobile, which then hit a parked car. Killpatrick was taken to the hospital where she later died from her injuries.

MARQUETTE — Snowmobiling is a huge tourist draw for the Upper Peninsula and the DNR is asking for your help to keep it that way.

They’re asking if you see any snowmobile trail signs being vandalized or stolen that you report it.

It’s a problem throughout the U.P. and Lower Michigan. The DNR believes signs are stolen for wall decorations or by people protesting trails.

They also say the signs that are stolen most often are stop signs which could threaten safety on the trails.

“The long and the short of it is it’s a major health and safety risk and these snowmobile trails are important to the people of the Upper Peninsula and they are very important to the people who come here,” said Ron Yesney of the DNR. “We have a world class snowmobile trail system and we want it preserved.”

If you see any signs being vandalized, contact your local DNR Office or call the RAP line 24 hours a day at 1-800-292-7800.?

The snowmobile trails are officially open as of today in Marquette County as well as the rest of the State of Michigan though the lack of snow has caused most to keep their sleds packed up in their garage. That will soon change (hopefully)!

The UP is in the cross hairs for a nice cold front set to blow into the air tonight into tomorrow. The cold arctic air will move across the “warm” waters of Lake Superior causing a significant accumulation of lake effect snow.

...SIGNIFICANT LAKE EFFECT SNOWS POSSIBLE NEAR LAKE SUPERIOR
WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING...
LOW PRESSURE CURRENTLY OVER MINNESOTA WILL MOVE ACROSS UPPER
MICHIGAN TONIGHT...THEN MERGE WITH DEVELOPING LOW PRESSURE OVER
THE OHIO VALLEY ON WEDNESDAY. BEHIND THE LOW...WINDS WILL TURN
NORTH AND NORTHWEST...ALLOWING COLDER AIR TO MOVE ACROSS THE
RELATIVELY WARM WATERS OF LAKE SUPERIOR. THIS SETUP WILL LIKELY
LEAD TO THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT LAKE EFFECT SNOWS OF THE SEASON FOR
AREAS NEAR LAKE SUPERIOR. CURRENT DATA SUGGESTS THAT AREAS FAVORED
BY A NORTHERLY WIND DIRECTION...SUCH AS INLAND NORTH CENTRAL UPPER
MICHIGAN AS WELL AS AREAS NEAR IRONWOOD...WILL SEE ACCUMULATING
SNOW WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING. AS THE WINDS TURN
NORTHWESTERLY THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING...ALL OF WESTERN
UPPER MICHIGAN FROM IRONWOOD TO THE KEWEENAW PENINSULA COULD SEE
MODERATE LAKE EFFECT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS.
WIDESPREAD LAKE EFFECT SNOW IS ALSO ANTICIPATED TO FALL ACROSS
LAKE EFFECT SNOW BELTS EAST OF MARQUETTE FAVORED BY A NORTHWEST WIND.
HOWEVER...THE LATEST INFORMATION SUGGESTS THIS SNOW WILL NOT BE AS
HEAVY AS PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT AS WINDS QUICKLY SHIFT TO THE WEST ON
THURSDAY NIGHT...SHIFTING THE HEAVIER SNOW OVER LAKE SUPERIOR.
LISTEN TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR LOCAL MEDIA FOR UPDATES ON
THIS SITUATION.
