April 6, 2010 –

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — The total number of winter visitors to Yellowstone National Park was up over 8 percent compared to the previous year, but was still 6 percent lower than the 2007-2008 season.

The total number of oversnow visitors remained flat, with a small drop in snowmobile visitors offset by a small increase in the number of snowcoach visitors. Limited snowpack at the beginning and end of this past winter may have contributed to the flat oversnow travel figures, and the increase in people who visited by car through the park’s North Entrance from December through March.

The total number of visitors this winter was 93,838 compared to last winter’s 86,784.
Yellowstone is currently operating under a temporary winter use plan, allowing for up to 318 commercially guided, best available technology (BAT) snowmobiles and 78 commercial snowcoaches a day in the park. The park will operate under the temporary plan again for the winter 2010-2011 season. Public scoping has just concluded on a new Winter Use Plan and Environmental Impact Statement. A draft is expected to be released a year from now, with a final plan in place for the 2011-2012 winter season. More information on the winter use plan is available at

CHEYENNE — Medicine Bow National Forest says it will take more time planning a controversial parking lot for snowmobiles off the Snowy Range National Scenic Byway.

District Ranger Larry Sandoval said the Forest Service isn’t ruling out building the parking lot but wants to resolve questions about the parking lot’s size as well as engineering and environmental considerations.

The Laramie environmental group Biodiversity Conservation Alliance says the byway is a poor location for a parking lot. The alliance is proposing two locations that aren’t near the byway.

Snowmobilers and the Wyoming Trails Program in the Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources also have concerns about the parking lot locations proposed by the Forest Service.

Read more about this story in Thursday’s Star-Tribune.

(AP) – Teton County commissioners have reversed course and banned snowmobiles from Buffalo Valley Road after residents complained of potential dangers and reduced property values.

The commissioners last week voted to revoke a Nov. 17 decision allowing snowmobiles on the road, citing a lack of notice given to area residents before the decision.

Chairman Hank Phibbs says he thought he was voting to allow snowmobiles on 1.6 miles of road, not the entire road.

Snowmobiles are allowed on county roads only with approval of commissioners.

Heart Six Ranch in Buffalo Valley had asked for the approval to encourage snowmobilers to frequent the restaurant and lodging in winter.

SHERIDAN, Wyo. — Five lost snowmobilers spent a cold night stranded in the Bighorn Mountains before being rescued over the weekend in northern Wyoming. Sheridan County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Conrad says the snowmobilers reported being lost in the Bighorn Mountains at about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday. They were found about 24 hours later.
